How is water-based cremation different from traditional cremation?

Aquamation is literally the opposite of flame-based cremation.  We use a water-based mineral solution that is heated and gently circulated around the pet's body to facilitate the natural breakdown process.

Because we are not burning fossil fuels, the  Aquamation process requires 90% less energy than cremation and produces significantly fewer carbon emissions.  Aquamation is a much more environmentally-friendly approach than flame cremation and a gentler, more respectful way to say goodbye. We believe Aquamation will be the next generation in after care for pets.

Why is Aquamation better for the environment?

The Aquamation process uses only water and electricity to heat it. There is no burning of fossil fuels, so there are no emissions into the atmosphere.  Aquamation requires 90% less energy than flame cremation and has a fraction of the carbon footprint.

The solution that remains after the Aquamation process is sterile and can be safely returned to the wastewater system. In fact, the water can be captured and used as an effective fertilizer in gardens and for agricultural use. We are actively working to establish local partnerships for this purpose.

Is water cremation for pets more expensive?

While Aquamation requires specialized equipment and a longer processing time, our pricing is comparable to a private cremation with remains returned. We believe families should not be put in the position of having to choose flame cremation over Aquamation due to cost.

We will also provide a 50% discount off our fee if the family does not want the remains returned to them.

How long does water cremation take?

Water "cremation" is a natural process, so it does take a bit longer than flame cremation.  The water solution is heated and circulated around the pets for about 20 hours. The process simply facilitates the natural process of breaking down the pet's body.  Next, the remains are respectfully transferred to a warming cabinet for a natural drying process that takes about 12 hours.  Once the remains are sufficiently clean and dry, they are prepared to return to the family in a container of their choice. In total, the Aquamation process takes 48 hours from start to finish.

What will the remains look like?

The remains are a soft white and very similar to sand in texture, reflecting the gentler nature of the Aquamation process. You will also receive about 20% more remains than you would following flame cremation, with fewer impurities.

Can you take horses and farm animals?

While we can handle just about any household pet, including the largest dogs and the smallest of creatures,  we are currently unable to handle animals over 550 pounds. Please contact us about possible options and we will do our best to work with you to accommodate your wishes.

How do I know I will receive only my pet’s remains?

Every pet entrusted to our care is handled individually and with the utmost respect. Each animal is carefully tracked throughout the entire Aquamation process. We follow strict protocols to ensure that the remains returned to you belong solely to your beloved companion.

How long does the Aquamation process take?

Accepted Answer

Aquamation is a natural process, involving a simple mixture of water and a naturally occurring chemical similar to baking soda. The water solution is heated to 204 degrees and circulated around the animals for 18 hours, facilitating the natural breakdown process. The remains are then dried for 12 hours and respectfully prepared to return to your family. We will have your beloved pet returned to you within 1 week.

How do I schedule Aquamation services for my pet?

Do you also offer euthanasia in Minnesota?

Accepted Answer

Yes, we partner with several veterinarians who offer in-home euthanasia services.  If you prefer to say goodbye to your pet in a "neutral" location, our partners are happy to meet with you at our Aqua Bridge facility where we have three private, comfortably furnished rooms available for families.

Question 11

Do you offer pickup services in Minnesota?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We will pick up your pet at your veterinary clinic or at home in Golden Valley and throughout the Twin Cities, depending on the situation. You may also choose to bring your pet to our Golden Valley facility, where we have three private, comfortably furnished comfort rooms where you can say goodbye on your own terms.
